Marvin Church is a premier grooming consultant and upscale hair artist that is the owner/operator of Marvin Church Grooming. Celebrating 40 years of haircutting in 2020, Marvin has gained notoriety as the go to groomer for both the discerning and sophisticated as well as people who live in the public eye. Starting out cutting hair under a light pole in the small town of Delmar, Maryland at 9 years old, Marvin has now styled clients from every continent in the world.

A native of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Marvin looked past his rural area and decided that his talents were worthy of breath across the world. His first stop was Philadelphia, a place that is very well known for barbering expertise and popularizing the beard. While there, Marvin honed his skillset becoming one of the City of Brotherly Love’s marquee hair artist’s while still serving his community in the Salisbury, Maryland area. However, larger challenges awaited him and Marvin steered his journey to the populous and more sophisticated Washington, D.C. Metropolitan region.

Marvin traversed the D.C. landscape working primarily in unisex salons located in downtown D.C. effectively expanding his market share from Maryland and Philadelphia. The move was a pivotal one as Marvin secured his now legendary base of core clientele and emerged as a powerhouse in the regional DMV (D.C., Maryland and Virginia) grooming business and beyond. From Politicians, Civil Rights icons, Newsmakers, and Secret Service agents to entrepreneurs and prominent government employees, all grooming roads in the Washington, D.C. region flow through Marvin Church.

Marvin’s Washington, D.C. grooming suite is the first to be housed in the famed We Work co-working space. This major accomplishment is accentuated by the fact that We Work is a global entity and Marvin is the only business of his kind within the entire We Work system.

Also known as “Marv The Barb” his celebrity barbering alter ego, Marvin has keep the image of men and women alike that live in the spotlight. His list of clients includes but is not limited to: Georgia Congressman and Civil Rights champion John Lewis. Marvin groomed Congressman Lewis for his “March” volumes 1-3 book tour. He has also styled NAACP IMAGE AWARD actor Tobias Truvillion, Boxer Bernard Hopkins and Mikey Perez, NBA players Brandon Bass, Omeka Okfur and NBA champion JaVale McGhee, MMA fighter Melvin Guillard and UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, Culinary star Chef Roble, and many more.

Marvin has an in-studio contract with NBC Universal as the personal groomer Chuck Todd for “Meet The Press”. He has styled the in-studio look for United States Vice President Mike Pence and many more during his tenure at NBC. In addition, he is the personal master groomer for best-selling author, political commentator, and Georgetown University professor, Michael Eric Dyson.

Marvin has assisted Mr. Dyson in maintaining his look weekly for many years across all major media outlets that he appears on or hosts monthly. He is also listed in the credits of the book “What Truth Sounds Like” as the “World’s Best Groomer”. Marvin accompanied Mr. Dyson for the entire season of shooting his daytime talk show “The Raw Word” in Hollywood, California in 2019. There he also styled hosts Dr. Dan Ratner and guests such as personality Jerry Springer, Actor-Activist Hill Harper, Actor Lyriq Bent, and Film producer Tommy Wiseau. More recently, Marvin accompanied Mr. Dyson on his major media tour of his newest New York Times best-selling book “JAY-Z: Made In America”. Tour stops included popular daytime talk shows: The View, Sway In The Morning, and Real Time with Bill Maher, Stephen A. Smith Show, The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Undisputed with Shannon Sharpe and Skip Bayless, The Breakfast Club, The Combat Jack podcast, Nick Cannon’s Master Class podcast, Toure Show, Jemele Hill’s podcast “Unbothered”, Jack The Ripper podcast, Melyssa Ford’s podcast “I’m Here For The Food” and many more.

Marvin has been recognized and featured by major media outlets: The Washingtonian and Jet Magazine in addition to a full-length editorial feature in The Washington Post Magazine among others. After an extensive career that is growing ever still, Marvin decided to embark into the world of retail grooming products and launched his Bethel Road brand of pre-shave oils and balms. The product is a mainstay for clients that use the products as part of an overall Marvin Church Grooming system. Marvin looks forward to expanding his footprint in the grooming world beyond the domestic east and west coasts and into the international community. When not on the road for work, driving his amazing car collection, or servicing his beloved clientele at his private appointment only grooming suite, Marvin is a married father of three that lives in the upscale Accokeek, Maryland neighborhood of the Washington, D.C. suburbs.
